As web designers we constantly have to edit images in order to suit the customer’s needs and at times, we are required to remove a certain color, for example black, from the image. There are lots of reasons for which we would have to do that. For example, you may want to replace one color with another of you may want to remove a color altogether so that you are left with a transparent field.
However, regardless of the reason for which we wanted to replace a color with a transparent field, we have found that GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is the best suited for the job. The program is free and you can download it from here and you can find large numbers of tutorials on the internet, especially on YouTube (where you can actually see what each step involves) and GIMP website.
These are the steps that you need to follow:
- You will have to open the imagine in GIMP.
- Right click and choose “Select” and from the menu that appears you must select “By colour”3. Right click and choose “Layer” -> “Transparency” -> “Add Alpha Channel”
4. Click on the color that you want to remove an then right click and choose “Edit” -> “Clear”
5. Click “File” -> “Export” and save the image with a “.png” file ending (if it is not selected already) and that’s it. You finished the job.
